I participated in a weekly program for single mother's last summer. I engaged in various workshops from healthy cooking for children, mindfulness and job searching. This was my first time participating in any type of program for single mothers and I felt an immediate connection with the other participants as well as the facilitators and Smile Foundation staff. This was so beneficial in the height of the pandemic helping to alleviate the stress of social isolation in my life. Additionally the SMILE foundation ensured participants had access to fresh food weekly. Food insecurity is high in my City Toronto. Knowing healthy food would arrive at my doorstep was a stress reliever, saved me time and enabled me to try new recipes. Well! The Foundation has been truly instrumental in providing me the opportunity to push forward to my Tertiary level education. I was able to regain the confidence of being a student again, participating in classes again and just being within a University which was once a vague dream. While I was on maternity leave the pandemic began and a friend of mine sent me a flyer saying, this is something you might like. It was the Single Mothers Thriving in a Pandemic program offered by SMILE. Through this program, I realized that I was not the only person with the thoughts I had, there were many more people like me, and I got to share my experiences and even share tips of how I deal with certain situations. From this program my family benefited from the food security smile sent to us each week; we never had to worry about food for a total of 4 months during the Pandemic.
